Clogged sprinkler heads are usually caused by debris getting into the system or building up inside the nozzle. Over time, dirt, sand, grass clippings, rust, and hard-water minerals can restrict water flow and change the spray pattern.

• Debris in the water line: Dirt or small particles can travel through the piping and collect at the head.
• Rust or scale: Older pipes and mineral-heavy water can leave deposits inside the nozzle.
• Damaged head components: A cracked cap, worn seal, or broken screen can let contamination enter.
• Shallow head placement: Exposed heads are more likely to pick up soil and lawn debris.

What to Look For

If a head is clogged, you may notice weak spray, one side of the pattern missing, sputtering, or a head that won’t pop up fully. In some cases, only one zone is affected, which points to a local blockage rather than a system-wide issue.
